For Week 3 of the Feminist PSA series:

We are responsible for knowing the the actual legacy of our country. When we celebrate 'Independence Day' we had better know who it was for, and why.

Some Facts To Know:⁠
🌺 On July 4, 1776 (ish): the Declaration of Independence is adopted by the 13 colonies in America⁠
🌺 Most of us are familiar with the infamous line: “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.”⁠
🌺 Here's the thing, according to the '🤢founding fathers'🤢 an enslaved person was considered 3/5ths a person, so didn't count under the whole "all men" category⁠
🌺 In the Declaration of Independence, Jefferson calls Native Americans "merciless savages", as justification of claiming more Native American land. If you have any confusion regarding the long standing history of racism against Native Americans by the United States government, just google 'Trail of Tears', and 'The Impact Of Covid 19 On Native American Communities'⁠
🌺 And in case you were wondering, white women were also not included in the definition of to be 'all men' under the grand id of 'all men are created equal'.⁠

So, if you're making hamburgers and eating corn on the cob during your 4th of July weekend ... while you are staring up at a sky filled with fireworks and the resulting chemical-laden smoke, take a moment and consider the history you're supposedly celebrating. 👩🏼‍💻
