When was the first time you read a Jane Austen novel? I actually can't remember... And perhaps that's because I have read and listened to and watched adaptations of her novels so many times they have just become a part of the pattern of my life. In winter, sometime around the Christmas rush when I am the most busy and stressed I almost always (without thinking) listen to Sense & Sensibility or Persuasion. I'm not entirely sure why I return to these texts time and again. Maybe it's because I imagine myself into her heroines so easily, or because they have faults that I feel in myself... Maybe because there is always a sense of hopefulness. And maybe it's because there is always a happy (of sorts) ending.
