Go Explore Beyond Your Door For We Don't Grow When We're Comfortable : 5x7 Print
I think it's telling that I was working on this illustration while listening to 'The Hobbit' read aloud by Andy Serkis.
How many times in that book do we hear the tension Bilbo feels between his longing for the comfortable, warm hearth of his hobbit hole, and the thrill of adventures that await him in the big world ✨beyond✨?
.
I worked away on this illustration, not even thinking about the possible symbolism for the references I chose; vintage travel tags, and victorian botanical studies from nature. The new year is here, and I suppose I wanted to subconsciously remind myself:
🥾Go Explore Beyond Your Door, For We Don't Grow When We're Comfortable

[Artwork Description: This is an acrylic ink and watercolor illustration composed in an arch shape. Details were added in colored pencil. In the foreground are the following, left-to-right: a chickadee sitting on a branch of red rose hips looking to the right, two snuggled amanita (red with white spots) mushrooms, and a branch of pink flowers with thorns. The mid-ground is composed of a line of abstracted evergreen trees painted in hookers green ink, through which we can see a distant vista of mountains painted in potters pink. Above the mountains an inky purple sky & a very large moon, around which a couple brown & yellow moths flutter. The text around the top of the arch reads, 'Go Explore Beyond Your Door, For We Don't Grow When We're Comfortable'.]
