I remember the first time I described myself as "a hot mess" in a therapy session. I'd gotten so used to talking about myself in those terms. Anxious, stressed, incapable, just... a big old hot mess. My therapist looked at me. "Wow." she said. "That was harsh." I looked back at her, a bit startled. "Do you really think that?" she asked me, "Do you really see yourself as a hot mess?" I didn't really know what to say. I mean, yes? Right? Maybe? I'd been hearing that message for so many years, soaking it into my body through my pours. "You are handling things many people would not be able to manage. And you are doing great. How you talk about yourself matters. You need to turn the spotlight of compassion you so freely spread around to others, onto yourself."
I don't think I have referred to myself as a hot mess after that moment. Learning to be unconditionally loving and compassionate towards yourself takes time, but it's so vital.
